The Alfons Roig Prizes and Grants, first introduced by the Diputación de Valencia (Valencia Provincial Council) in 1981, were created to support Valencian art. While the prize recognized the career and contributions of an established artist, the grants were intended to promote emerging artists and were awarded on a competitive process.
The catalogue reproduced here corresponds to the publication for the first edition of the awards, in which the prize was awarded to Josep Renau, and the grants went to Enric Alfons, Martín Caballero and Jorge Mercé. The work submitted by Enric Alfons was from his Fetitxes series.
The works of both the prize winner and the recipients of the grant were exhibited at Sala Parpalló, a venue closely linked to these awards. The exhibition opened on 16 November 1982, coinciding with the presentation of that year’s prize and grants.
