One of the goals of the Valencia City Council after the first democratic municipal elections following Franco’s regime, in April 1979, was to promote culture and to recognize access to it as a fundamental right for all individuals.
In this spirit, and as part of the activities organized during the so-called Month of Civic Solidarity, this exhibition was presented in Valencia with the aim of showcasing the best Valencian painting of the time.
The selection of artists was based on their connection to the city of Valencia and having graduated from the San Carlos School of Fine Arts in prior years. The works on display were chosen to reflect the artists' current practice.
As noted by Román de la Calle, this was a commendable effort to bring the Valencian public closer to “their” recent painting.
