Igualdad es diferencias [Equality Is Difference] was the second exhibition in a series of solo and group shows promoted by the Generalitat Valenciana through its Consorci de Museus de la Comunitat Valenciana, aimed at supporting emerging Valencian artists.
While the first exhibition, Femenino, Plural, focused on the relationship between art and women, this second show, according to curator David Pérez, sought to offer a vision of the role art can play in contemporary society and its potential political and social impact. The participating artists approached their work with a sense of commitment, addressing themes such as immigration, violence, the artist's social role as a worker, homosexuality and homophobia, individual and collective identity, awareness of AIDS, ecology, the body and its representations, and the threat of advertising.
Enric Alfons took part with several works from his Dormir al Ras and Albaneses series, both of which explore the phenomenon of migration: the former, from the Moroccan coast to Spain; the latter, from Albania to surrounding countries, with a particular focus on migration toward Greece, during a period marked by profound historical upheaval.
These exhibitions toured cultural centres throughout towns in the Valencian Community (photographs of the catalogue covers from some of these solo shows in various towns are included here), and were also presented in Italy as a group show.
The following year, the essay Del arte impuro. Entre lo público y lo privado [On Impure Art: Between the Public and the Private], also by David Pérez (included in this references section), was published. In it, essays by the art critics involved in the Igualdad es diferencias project, accompanied by images and texts by the artists, explore specific aspects of the social and cultural context of the time, which contemporary art sought to confront with a strong sense of engagement.
